Taking over flip cards

Asked by CallMeCrazy 12 years ago

I have Olivia Voldaren out and I take over a werewolf, what happens when it flips?

The effect is still permanent regardless of what creature types change when the card flips. So it still be a vampire.

When a creature flips, it remains the same permanent; it just gains a new name and new (written) creature types. Olivia Voldaren 's effect that makes it a vampire "in addition to its other types" will still apply.

If the creature had to leave the battlefield, this would be different, but that is not the case.

This does bring up a question in my mind, though. What happens to a Selesnya Keyrune if it gets pinged by Olivia while it's a creature?

If the keyrune is not destroyed and is allowed do deactivate, will it still be a vampire if I choose to activate it again? Because it stopped being a creature, did Olivia's "becomes a vampire" clause stop applying?

(spamming a bit now sorry)

It's worth noting that even if the creature you take control of somehow ceases to be a vampire, you still retain control of it for as long as you control Olivia Voldaren . It only needs to be a vampire in order to be targeted by Olivia's effect.

I believe the same principle as the original question still applies. A keyrune might cease to be a creature, but as long as you hit is while it was valid target when animated I don't see why it would loose that effect. In fact, her third ability doesn't even specify target Vampire creature.

Her third ability does specify Vampire. It does not, however, state that you lose control of the creature if it stops being a Vampire, nor does it state that you lose control if it stops being a creature.

Now, I'm no expert yet, but I believe, landgrafb, that Vampire is a subtype of the Creature supertype. I think something that is no longer a Creature ceases to maintain its creature subtypes.

Urto is right about a noncreature, nontribal card not being able to have the "Vampire" subtype. Technically, Olivia Voldaren 's type-changing effect is still being applied, but it's having no result.

If the Keyrune is activated again it won't be a Vampire anymore, because the animating ability sets the type without saying "in addition" and will have a newer timestamp than Olivia's effect. Like others have said, if this object was stolen by Olivia while it was sill a Vampire this won't cause you to lose control of it, because the control-changing effect only cares about whether or not you still control Olivia.
