Tahngarth and Soul-Scar Mage interaction

Asked by Ziembski 6 years ago

As we know, when Tahngarth, Talruum Hero uses his "fight" mechanic while equipped with wither, he weakens his target before he gets damage back. Does Soul-Scar Mage also make him put -1/-1 counters before targeted creatures hits him back?

Its replacement effect, as is wither, so basicly it should work.

All damage that isn't dealt as a turn-based action in the combat damage step is noncombat damage - that includes damage from fight effects, contrary from what the wording might suggest, as well as all "deals damage to effects".

So, since Tahngarth deals noncombat damage to an opponent's creature, Soul-Scar Mage's ability will apply to it and replace the damage with -1/-1 counters. This is more or less exactly what Wither does, except that it's not a keyword ability, and that it only applies to noncombat damage.

Note that wither is not a replacement effect. Although it changes the result of damage, it doesn't replace damage with something else; it defines the nature of the damage being dealt.

This was done in order to keep wither from creating odd interactions with other kinds of damage-matters abilities, such as lifelink.
