Sway of the Stars and Booby Trap
Asked by toktikz 13 years ago
sway of the stars indicate that Each player shuffles his or her hand, graveyard, and permanents he or she owns into his or her library, then draws seven cards. Each player's life total becomes 7.
If the opponent drew the card i have named for the trap, so it deals 10 damage, does it kill him because his/her life became 7 or it deals the 10 damage first before making his/her life 7?

A permanent's abilities only work while it's on the battlefield, unless it specifically mentions another zone it works in. Because your opponent draws the cards after your Booby Trap has been shuffled into your library, the trap isn't around to affect his draws at all.

What would happen if you managed to somehow get Booby Trap phased out when Sway of the Stars resolved?

Not sure if that's how phasing works, but let's say it is.
It would kill him because you may not put a spell or ability on the stack while a spell or ability is resolving. Each player does all actions of Stars before any triggered effects are put on the stack. Thus by the time the Trap resolves, barring no life gain abilities/spells also put on the stack, it will kill the opponent.

If the Trap is phased out while Sway is resolving, then the game will ignore it completely. It still won't trigger.

Yes, but the point is it will still be in play so it can trigger on any draw afterward, when the person is still down at 7 life.

Ha... What if I exile Booby Trap with an Oblivion Ring than play the Sway of the Stars ?

Then Oblivion Ring's trigger won't resolve until after all of Sway of the Stars has finished resolving, to include drawing 7 cards on a Booby Trap-free board.
Nothing you do can bring something back in between the time all permanents get shuffled in and the time everyone draws cards.

No, because Booby Trap is no longer on the battlefield, so it no longer forces the opponent to reveal the cards they draw and its triggered ability is no longer in effect. Note that you shuffle the permanents and other cards into the library, THEN draw 7 cards.
