[Sudden Spoiling] with +1/+1 Counters
Asked by falconaire1238 12 years ago
What happens when you cast [Sudden Spoiling] on an opponent who has creatures that have +1/+1 counters on it? Does the creature become a 0/2 still, or does it still get the bonuses from the counters?
Oh, and linking to card names requires double brackets, not single brackets. Sudden Spoiling

I found an article on the Wizards' website that may help you here: http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=judge/article/20091105a
It isn't the official rules text, but it's good enough. The chart about one-fifth of the way down explains a lot. The layers you're specifically looking for in your example would be 6B and 6D I believe.

The creatures become 0/2 and the +1/+1 counters will remain. Thus in your example the creature dependant on the amount of counters will be 0/2 + x/x counters.

Effects that set a P/T are always applied before other effects. Your creature will be a vanilla 0/2 base with +X/+X, where X is the number of +1/+1 counters on it.

I'm not too great with layering, but in some cases it will be 0/2 in the first layer and then the +1/+1 counter is applied, making it a 1/3. Note the key words are "some cases". I'm pretty sure mafteechr knows all about layering and can tell you more about it.
