Sudden disappearance v. Porphyry nodes?

Asked by incredibruhahaha 7 years ago

Does a card that will temporarily remove the supposed target of a Porphyry Nodes from the game, say Eerie Interlude, effectively prevent it from triggering? This assuming there're more than one creatures on the field.

Say I make a 1/1 disappear as the nodes trigger. Would the nodes now target a 2/2 that happens to be on the battlefield too? Or would it just not trigger at all?

First, you don't prevent the ability from triggering. Porphyry Nodes's ability triggers at the beginning of your upkeep, so it'll be on the stack before you can actually cast any spells or activate an abilities.

Second, Porphyry Nodes's ability doesn't target anything. A spell or ability only targets if it uses the word "target" in its text. Instead, Porphyry Nodes's ability checks on resolution to determine which creature on the battlefield at that time has the lowest power. It doesn't "remember" which creature had the lowest power, or what the lowest power among creatures was, when the ability triggered. It just cares about what's on the board when the ability resolves.

If you have a 1/1 and a 2/2 and you exile the 1/1, the 2/2 will be destroyed.
