Stack and double Brave the Elements
Asked by ajclarke 11 years ago
Situation: I had a boat load of white creatures (enough to kill opponent). They were playing white only deck.
On my main phase 1: I cast Brave the Elements giving my whites protection from whites.
Opponent retaliates with Brave the Elements giving her whites protection from whites too.
As the opponent's card is on the stack first, it resolves first, meaning my Brave the Elements doesn't do anything?
Your Brave the Elements still resolves, giving your creatures protection from whatever color you choose. If you choose white, his creatures still would not be able to block because protection prevents creatures of that color from blocking your creatures. Brave the Elements does not target so using Brave the Elements to give his own creatures protection will not prevent you from attacking unblocked.

I don't understand why you think your opponent's Brave the Elements negates yours. Brave the Elements only affects white creatures that share a controller with Brave the Elements .
The end result is that your white creatures will have protection from white and your opponent's creatures will have protection from white. You can attack and your opponent won't be able to block because your creatures have protection from white.

and yes, your opponent can't block your white creatures once it resolves (and you can't block hers either)

No... I'm not sure how you would come to that conclusion, but I'll run through the possible scenarios you might mean. 1. They target your creatures to stop your Brave the Elements from effecting them: they still get pro white, her white creatures can't block, you win 2. They target their creatures: Their creatures gain pro white. Then yours resolve. Your creatures gain pro white. Your creatures can't be blocked by white creatures, damage goes through, they take lethal damage. Either way they can't block your creatures.Either way, if your creatures gain pro white they can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage or enchanted by anything white. This means your attack goes through. Its in the reminder text even. :)

Assume nothing else is on the stack, your opponent's Brave the Elements resolves first then yours would resolve. Both of you and the opponent's creatures have protection from white.
When you attack, she can't block your creatures cause they have protection from white. The same is true for her if the roles had been reverse.

@Bestach: Brave the Elements doesn't target anything, and it only affects your own creatures. This was explained in the OP; each player cast Brave the Elements to give his or her own creatures protection from white. Also, Brave the Elements can't fizzle because it doesn't target.

Did I say target? Oops, not what I meant. I know it can't fizzle, but I was clarifying that it didn't work as i was also confused about why he thought the Brave the Elements would negate each other. I didn't explain that very clearly...

Ok thanks all, I think my confusion was because Brave the Elements is itself white, but as Epochalyptik said, it doesn't target so that explains it.
Thanks :)

Because the selected answer was technically inaccurate, I reselected it.

Why wouldn't it do anything? Brave the Elements doesn't Damage, Enchant, Block nor Target her creatures does it?
Your Brave the Elements still gives your creatures protection from white. The fact that your opponents spell also resolved has nothing to do from it.
