Split cards and protection

Asked by zekna1992 12 years ago

It is to my understanding that something has to have a legal target in order to be cast and that split cards that have different mono colored sides are considered multicolored while they are in the hand and won't be considered mono colored untill put on the stack assuming only half was cast.

So if something has protection from multicolored could you target it with half of a split card since the card will be mono colored on the stack or since the card is considered multicolored in hand would you never be able to cast it because it isn't a legal target.

Thanks in advance for the help.

When you cast one side of a split card, the spell only has the properties of that side. It doesn't consider the other half unless you fused it. A card with protection from multicolored (e.g. Enemy of the Guildpact ) would not have protection from a monocolored side of a multicolored split card because only the monocolored side is cast.

The other thing to remember is that when you Fuse a split card, it become a single multi-color spell. This is important to note for a number of situations.

For example (happened to me during the pre-release), opponent has Lavinia of the Tenth and you have Turn / Burn in hand.

You can cast Turn, and target Lavinia of the Tenth ... or you can cast Burn and hit your opponent for 2.

However, you cannot cast both targeting your opponent with the Burn side and Lavinia of the Tenth with the Turn side, because the single spell is both blue and red, and the creature has protection from Red.
