Smelt-Ward Gatekeepers at end of turn

Asked by kanofudo 11 years ago

If I have Smelt-Ward Gatekeeprs soulbonded to Deadeye Navigator , and I use the soulbonded ability to flicker the Gatekeepers at the end of my turn, would I have the creature until the end of the next turn or would I just instantly lose control of it?

You have it and can have priority to use any activated abilities with it, etc., but you'll lose it immediately afterward during the cleanup step.

You would lose control of the creature after the end step is finished. It would be better to flicker at your opponent's upkeep.

For a more detailed explanation of what's going on, the End phase has 2 steps: end and cleanup. Things that trigger "at the beginning of the end step" trigger....at the beginning of the end step (of course), and effects that last "this turn" or "until end of turn" wear off at the beginning of the cleanup step.

Players don't often get priority to take actions during the cleanup step, but if they do (usually because something happened to make an ability trigger) then the game will start another cleanup step before moving on to the next turn. Except for Staying Power out in Un-land, there's no way to make "this turn" or "until end of turn" effects carry over across turns.
