Skirk Fire Marshal + Planeswalker question
Asked by EternalHellfire 10 years ago
This question popped into my head after a recent commander game and is purely for my own curiosity. Friend of mine was at 4 life and was being attacked for lethal with a skirk fire marshal and enough goblins to activate him at least once AND a Koth of the Hammer. In response to being attacked, he activated SFM to kill himself and the attacking player. After the game was over, he facepalmed and said he could've redirected his SFM damage from him to his own planeswalker to save himself.
My question is whether or not he could've actually done this as every ruling I've looked up kept saying an opponent may instead redirect the damage and it never actually said 'player.'

First, link all cards in your question.
Skirk Fire Marshal
Koth of the Hammer
You're right to question it. You can only redirect damage you would deal to an opponent to a planeswalker that opponent controls instead. You can't redirect damage that you would deal to yourself (or damage that would be dealt to you in general).
