Shared Fate and "from your hand" abilities

Asked by SorcerersBone 11 years ago

Say I somehow I exile from my opponent's library a Myojin. Let's say a Myojin of Life's Web , then I cast it from exile.

Does the Myojin get the counter? I realize that removing the counter shouldn't work with the exiled cards, but Shared Fate says "... as though they were in his or her hand" so it should at the very least get the counter, right?

No.

First, always check the Oracle text of the cards in question. Shared Fate 's current wording is "Each player may look at and play cards he or she exiled with Shared Fate." It doesn't have the "as though they were in his or her hand" clause."

Second, Myojin of Life's Web cares only about where the card was originally. It doesn't care about effects that change the zones from which you could cast cards.

Just as info: the "as though it were in your hand" text on old cards that let you cast spells from other zones was never totally necessary for making the cards work. It was included to try and help explain the effect, but as we can see here it sometimes caused confusion of its own when combined with other effects having to do with a player's hand. The text was eventually dropped from the standard template, and all cards that were printed with it have received updates to their Oracle text.
