Ruling on Launch the Fleet

Asked by Bobby654 9 years ago

Here's what happened. I was using my boros deck and my opponent was using a token deck. I used Launch the Fleet and had 5 creatures so I got 5 token's. Then my opponent also used it but he only had one creature. He said that the tokens made by Launch the Fleet was fuel for strive. I said it wasn't then we got into a fight. Who would've won that. me or him

Your question isn't entirely clear, so there seem to be two possibilities:

1: Your opponent casts Launch the Fleet intending to target only his own creatures. At this time, your opponent has only one creature, so there is only one legal target under his control. Launch the Fleet targets creatures you control and gives them a triggered ability that triggers when they attack. It does NOT generate tokens immediately, and the tokens won't even be created until after the spell resolve and after the triggered abilities the spell creates resolve. There's absolutely no possibility that they are legal targets at the time Launch the Fleet is cast.

2: Your opponent casts Launch the Fleet targeting his one creature and some number of your creatures. This is a bad move, as the triggered abilities are conferred to the target creatures and are therefore controlled by the player who controls those creatures. Casting Launch the Fleet on your opponent's tokens would only give your opponent more tokens.

And just so we're clear, Launch the Fleet does nothing for you when it isn't your turn. Because you didn't specify when each Launch the Fleet was cast, it's unclear whether it would have benefited anyone at all.

It's still not clear exactly what was happening. I know you selected an answer already, but could you describe the situation a bit more?
