Recurring Nightmare + Keldon Champion
Asked by Kryptokid 13 years ago
I am trying to understand the way Recurring Nightmare can be used end of turn with the Keldon Champion in lieu of paying echo cost at upkeep.
Also If I had one Keldon Champion in my graveyard and one in play how could Recurring Nightmare play out then?
Thanks
So If I put a Keldon in play and I swing with him, then second main phase I can use the nightmare to sac and bring in something from my graveyard after combat damage resolves. Combat damage is dealt and instead of paying the echo cost (I usually don't), I have a larger creature in play next turn without summoning sickness. Problem is that evolution cost 7 mana to make happen.
Now another question. If I animate dead a Keldon do I still have an echo cost the next turn?

Echo triggers at the beginning of your upkeep if the permanent has come under your control since the beginning of your previous upkeep. Reanimating a Keldon Champion in any way will make Echo trigger at the beginning of your next upkeep.

Now what if I have Sheoldred, Whispering One in play and I play Keldon Champion . On the next upkeep do sheoldreds effect keldon?

It doesn't matter how Keldon Champion comes into play. Echo costs always trigger on the upkeep of the next turn regardless.

If you're asking if you can sac the Champion by not paying it's echo cost, then return it to the battlefield with Sheoldred during the same upkeep, then no.
Both abilities trigger at the same time (the beginning of upkeep). Keldon isn't in the graveyard when Sheoldred's ability goes on the stack, therefore it isn't a valid target. You could only bring it back every other turn.
702.28a Echo is a triggered ability. Echo [cost] means At the beginning of your upkeep, if this permanent came under your control since the beginning of your last upkeep, sacrifice it unless you pay [cost].

I'm willing to try to help you by answering your question, but I'm not too sure what you're asking.
If you have a Keldon Champion in your graveyard, you can use Recurring nightmare during your second main phase to return the champion to the battlefield. This will cause the champion's ETB ability to trigger, and deal 3 damage to target player. You can't activate the nightmare's ability during the end step, as it can only be activated as a sorcery.
When your next turn begins, the echo ability will trigger at the beginning of your upkeep, and make you pay the cost or sacrifice the champion. You are free to sacrifice the champion, play the nightmare again, and return the champion via the nightmare if you wish.
Second Q: You could sacrifice a champion for part of the nightmare's cost, returning the other one. You'll need to pay for the returned champion's echo cost when your next upkeep comes around.
Hope this helps
