Questionable Wish

Can you Death Wish for a card that is banned from the format you're playing? In particular can I Death Wish for a Griselbrand during an EDH game?

No.

When you cast a wish in a non-casual game, you are only allowed to get a card from your sideboard. Sideboards follow format rules, so you can't have any banned cards in your sideboard. Consequently, you can't search for a banned card.

Always check Oracle rulings.

10/1/2009: In a sanctioned event, a card that's "outside the game" is one that's in your sideboard. In an unsanctioned event, you may choose any card from your collection.

But EDH is casual is it not? I mean there is no sideboard and we're not playing in a tournament.

EDH does have a sideboard rule: your sideboard can contain up to ten cards.

If you aren't playing with the sideboard rule, you can get any card from your collection, provided that card is legal in the format. You can't find banned cards with Wishes.
