Question about Serra Avatar

I want to use Serra Avatar in my Mayael the Anima EDH deck. Say I still have 40 life. Does it have 40 power when I use Mayael's ability? or is it x.

7/1/2012: The ability that defines Serra Avatar's power and toughness works in all zones, not just the battlefield.

Serra Avatar 's power and thoughness use what's called a "characteristic-defined ability" (CDA) to figure out its value. CDA's are constantly updated wherever they are, at any time its value is needed.
When you reveal Serra Avatar using Mayael the Anima 's ability, Serra's P/T will be equal to your current life total. In your described situation, it'll be 40/40.
