Question about celestial flare

Asked by Vigi 11 years ago

Can you regenerate a creature in response to celestial flare to remove him from combat and thus fizzle the flare?

No... sadly regeneration taps the creature, removes all damage marked on it and removes it from combat (if it happens to be in combat). Celestial Flare makes you sacrifice a creature.

Regeneration gets you by damage done to the creature or destruction; it does not help you with exile, sacrifice or -X/-X.

No because sacrifice does not deal damage. Regenerate only works if the said creature dies to damage. This is what allows you to sacrifice indestructible creatures.

Only if you cast your own destroy effect first with a Doom Blade or something.

Regenerating a creature doesn't actually remove it from combat when you activate it, instead it creates a replacement effect that essentially says

"if this creature would be destroyed, instead tap it, remove all damage marked on it, and remove it from combat"

Take note, that if you have any creatures that still are attacking/blocking after this, you'll still have to choose and sacrifice one of them.

Here are the relevant rules

  • regeneration

701.12a If the effect of a resolving spell or ability regenerates a permanent, it creates a replacement effect that protects the permanent the next time it would be destroyed this turn. In this case, Regenerate [permanent] means The next time [permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage marked on it and tap it. If its an attacking or blocking creature, remove it from combat.

  • "removed from combat"

506.4. A permanent is removed from combat if it leaves the battlefield, if its controller changes, if it phases out, if an effect specifically removes it from combat, if its a planeswalker thats being attacked and stops being a planeswalker, or if its an attacking or blocking creature that regenerates (see rule 701.12) or stops being a creature. A creature thats removed from combat stops being an attacking, blocking, blocked, and/or unblocked creature. A planeswalker thats removed from combat stops being attacked.
