I was looking at a Polukranos, World Eater and I noticed that there are are 2 X in its monstrous ability. Why is this and what is the difference?

Because there are 2 X's in the cost, you have to pay X mana TWICE, to set the value of X it's abilities. Using Duck_of_doom's example, Polukranos, World Eater enters as a 5/5. if you wanted X to be 3 in 'Monstrous X', you would have to pay X + X + G (X = 3), meaning 3+3+G.

When you cast a spell or activate an ability with in its cost, you determine the value of
during the casting/activation process. When you pay costs (which is the final step of either process), you calculate the cost based on the declared value of
.
Polukranos, World Eater
's monstrosity ability costs , which means you declare a value for
and then pay
+
+
. For example, if you declared a value of five for
, you would need to pay 5+5+
.

The reason why they have put two X in polukranos ability is probably because they wanted a balanced card and what do you mean by "what is the difference" ? If you wonder about how much mana you must pay to make it for example a 8/8 it's seven mana .
