Playing Monstrocity

Asked by Arthur558 11 years ago

When you bring a creature down on the battlefield can you pay the Monstrocity cost and make it Monstrous? That is, instead of paying it's casting cost when you bring it down just pay the Monstrocity cost? Or do you have to pay both costs to make the creature Monstrous, either at the same time or on separate turns? Have read rule, and one of the responses to a question, but still need a little clarification given how the response was phrased. Thanks.

You have to pay both. Monstrosity is an activated ability. It is NOT an alternate or additional casting cost. Monstrosity can't be activated until the creature spell resolves and the creature permanent enters the battlefield.

Creature cards with Monstrous (ie: Arbor Colossus ) have Monstrous as an ability, rather than an alternative cost (such as Overload ie: Mizzium Mortars ). Replacement costs in spells will say things about casting them for the alternative cost (such as Bestow making things enchantments or Overload changing target to each).

Also note the colon after monstrosity; Arbor Colossus has "Monstrosity 3: ". The colon means it is an activated ability, whereas the overload in Mizzium Mortars does not have one.
