Planeswalker, the stack and receiving damage from sources
Asked by Fizzz 11 years ago
Hello,
If some dude casts Jace, Architect of Thought , could I cast something before he activates his friggin +1 ability? Like Boros charm to death? :D
If a spell says "This spell deals 4 damage to each creature and player", could I redirect the 4 damage that a player would receive to his/her walker? Or does the damage must target the player only. The rule says that when a source of my own would deal damage to a player, I can choose to redirect the damage to the walker.
Cheers! TGIF!
No. When a spell resolves, the active player retains priority to cast more spells or put abilities on the stack.
When he activates Jace's ability by paying the cost, the ability goes onto the stack. He will need to pass priority before the ability resolves, at which time you are free to kill Jace however tickles your fancy, however, since the ability is already on the stack, it will resolve regardless of whether the source is still around.

In regards the second question there, yes, any time you would deal damage to a player, you can choose to redirect that damage to a planeswalker they control, so you could Boros Charm their Jace, but not until after the ability has been activated.

Bah, stupid lack of edit button: In the interests of clarity, when I say "any time you would deal damage to a player" I mean via spells or abilities which deal damage to players, not combat damage. Creatures need to explicitly attack a Planeswalker instead of a player in order to damage them.

When a spell resolves, the active player gets priority. If there's no shenanigans going on, your opponent is casting Jace, Architect of Thought during his turn. This means he'll have priority again to cast another spell or activate an ability after Jace resolves. He can activate one of Jace's abilities before you get the opportunity to make any responses (keep in mind that adding/removing loyalty counters is part of the cost).
You have the right idea about redirecting damage. It doesn't matter whether or not a source is only dealing damage to an opponent or also to some other things. You can redirect all of the damage that would be dealt to the opponent to one of his planeswalkers instead.
