Phyrexian Unlife + Overkill damage = ?

Asked by IAmKingTony 13 years ago

Say my opponent has Phyrexian UnlifeMTG Card: Phyrexian Unlife out with 8 life remaining. I swing in for 31, what happens?

If you attack with enough creatures to hit him with 31 combat damage, then Phyrexian Unlife wouldn't do anything to the damage. He isn't at 0 or less life, so it's second ability doesn't change the damage to infect. He would take 31 damage and go down to -23.

He wouldn't lose the game like he would normally, but any further damage that's done to him would be replaced by the second ability. So if he's at -23 and you swing for 5, then he would take 5 poison counters.

This doesnt sound right. its shouldnt give you a frebee basicly it should turn all damage past zero into poison counters. even if all the damage was done at the same time.

Sorry neozzero but it is right.

Here's the oracle ruling.

6/1/2011: Phyrexian Unlife won't affect damage that reduces your life total from a positive number to 0 or less. For example, if you're at 3 life and are dealt 5 damage, you'll end up at -2 life. The next time you're dealt damage, it will be dealt as though its source had infect.

The reason is because there is only one damage event, so condition for the replacement ability is only checked one time. It either gets replaced as a whole, or it doesn't.
