Parallel Lives question...

Asked by Glaspo 12 years ago

How exactly does Parallel Lives work in a situation when there are 2 of them on the battlefield?

For instance, let's say I have 2 in play then I go ahead a play a card such as Call of the Conclave do I then get three 3/3 centaur tokens (1 for then spell itself then 2 more as a result of each parallel lives) or do i get more considering that nit only is the initial token getting copied by each parallel lives, but the copies are getting doubled as well themselves???

I know I am probably over-thinking the situation, but I figured it doesn't hurt to ask and be sure lol

Thanks!

Parallel Lives goes on to s stack once you do somthing that give you tokens, after casting Call of the Conclave the first one with give 2 then the next one will give you 4 the amount of token is double after each trigger of Parallel Lives

Actually you'd get 4, the first one would happen which would give you two, then the second would double that so 1 x 2 x 2 = 4

@demonx666: Parallel Lives 's ability does NOT use the stack. It is a replacement effect, and it simply applies at the time the event it replaces would normally happen.

In this case, Parallel Lives 's Gatherer page gives you the answer you need:

9/22/2011: If you control two Parallel Lives, then the number of tokens created is four times the original number. If you control three, then the number of tokens created is eight times the original number, and so on.

Each Parallel Lives has a replacement effect, and each of these replacement effects will be applied to the event if possible. In this case, the first Parallel Lives doubles Call of the Conclave 's one 3/3 token to two 3/3 tokens. The second Parallel Lives then doubles that to four 3/3 tokens. These tokens are all produced at the same time, and they are all produced by the Call of the Conclave .

Your end result was correct, but the methodology is wrong. One of the most important aspects of replacement effects is their immediate application. They don't use the stack because, mechanically speaking, they can't, and that's important to remember because they can't be countered or responded to like other abilities can.
