Paradox engine + non-land mana acquiring

Asked by 1R1SHMAN04 7 years ago

So the Paradox Engine makes it so that whenever you cast a spell, untapped all non land permanents you control. There are non-land ways of getting mana like the Chromatic Lantern for example. If I used a Chromatic Lantern to pay for a 1 cost instant would I tap the lantern, cast the spell then untap the lantern because of Paradox Engine?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: Paradox Engine's triggered ability goes on the stack after you are finished casting your spell, but before that spell resolves. Since you tapped Chromatic Lantern to cast that spell, when Paradox Engine's triggered ability resolves, it will untap your Chromatic Lantern.

Additionally, even if you didn't use Chromatic Lantern to cast the spell, you could still activate its mana ability in response to Paradox Engine's triggered ability in order to add one mana to your mana pool. The mana will stay until the end of the step or phase you are in (upkeep, draw phase, main phase, etc.), and Paradox Engine's triggered ability will still untap it, allowing you to get extra mana.
