Obsidian Fireheart's Blaze counters + Proliferate
Asked by Sudain 13 years ago
I get Obsidian Fireheart 's blade counters on a land. I prolifterate via some method. Now does the land do 2 damage per upkeep?
I'd argue no because of the wording. "So long as the land has a blaze counter, it gains...." 2 counters are just harder to remove than one, so no extra damage.

I have a question about cards that use the phrasing "as long as it..". Does that effect last even after the creature that created it is removed from the field?

"As long as" the conditions for the ability are still true (i.e. the ability doesn't specifically state the creature needs to be on the battlefield) I'm fairly sure the effect hangs around. Obsidian Fireheart certainly works like this, as you can see from it's reminder text. Was there any card in particular you were thinking of?

oracle rulings
10/1/2009 If all blaze counters on a land are moved to a different land, the triggered ability doesn't follow them. The first land no longer has the ability because it no longer has a blaze counter on it. The second land doesn't have the ability because Obsidian Fireheart didn't target it.
10/1/2009 If a land ends up with more than one blaze counter on it (thanks to Doubling Season or Gilder Bairn, for example), the ability still only causes it to deal 1 damage to its controller each turn.

Oracle ruling:
10/1/2009: As the reminder text indicates, whether the targeted land has the triggered ability that's been granted to it depends only on whether it has a blaze counter on it, not on whether Obsidian Fireheart is still on the battlefield.
Also, happy to help.

You are correct. If the ability stated that "It has 'At the beginning of your upkeep, this land does 1 damage to you for each blaze counter on it'", then yes, multiple counters would affect the amount of damage dealt. However, the number of counters is in no way proportional to the amount of damage dealt. They just mark which lands deal damage.
