Negator vs Obliterator
Asked by Plummyr 13 years ago
A friend recently bought the Phyrexian Negator under the impression it was an earlier version of Phyrexian Obliterator , but the wording on the Negator confuses me. Anyone want to clarify for us? Thanks!

They are obviously related to each other thematically, but they are not versions of each other. Negator requires ITS CONTROLLER to sacrifice permanents. Obliterator requires the controller's ENEMY to sacrifice permanents,.

That's the impression that I was under, but I knew that wording had changed a lot since the Negator came out and just wanted to double check since the cards are amazingly similar.

If you're ever confused by the wording on a card, you can check its Oracle text. This is the most up-to-date, modernized version of a card's text, and comes directly from WotC.
Oracle text for cards can be found on the Gatherer site or here.

Phyrexian Negator states that you have to sacrifice a permanent for each 1 damage dealt to it. So if negator is dealt 2 damage you must also sacrifice 2 permanents of your choice that you control.
