negative poison damage

Asked by ParadoxWizard 13 years ago

if I have 2 poison counters, and a 1/1 creature with infect attacks me, and I use turn the tide during the damage step to decrease him to -1/1, will he remove a poison counter from me?

no. the creature would do no damage, as if its power was 0.

You absolutely can lower the power/toughness of a creature below 0. Char-Rumbler and -1/-1 counters are examples. It's just that creatures with negative power deal 0 damage and creatures with negative or zero toughness die as a state-based action.

To answer the question:

Note that I mentioned creatures with negative power simply deal no damage. It is not logical that they deal "negative" damage. They simply don't deal any damage.

If a creature would deal damage, only the positive damage counts. Any other damage (negative values) or 0 simply does not count as damage (the creature did not deal damage).

But negative power values are still possible.let's take a wall, let's say a 0/8 wall.

if you put several -1/-1 counters on it, it will have negative power. If later you boost his power with a spell, because of the layer system, the counters will be applied last an thus will still be under that effect, possibly below 0.

Lol, if negative damage existed (!!!!!), I could gain life from it and kill someone with that method using Sanguine Bond :)

That is side-splittingly funny :)

It would be funny, if it were possible.

That's what I said! What would be even funnier is if a creature with power and toughness of, say, -2/4 had infect... and dealt damage in the form of +1/+1 counters to creatures!!

Rofl moment!

Even if negative damage were possible, a negative hitter with infect wouldn't add +1/+1's, it would remove -1/-1's.

Yeah, I suppose... Either way, negative damage in any format (normal, wither, infect) would be hilarious.

There should be a casual format that centers on odd ideas like this.

Funnily enough, my friends and I sometimes play our own restrictions, such as maybe all build a deck of the same colour; or get 10 lands (2 of each) and pick out 2 lands at random, kept secret and make the dual colour as picked. I may introduce this random idea of negative damage. If we play it out, I'll tell the story of the best bits here, I'm sure it will get a laugh.

Here's another idea: how about the stack resolves in reverse to how it normally does?! So the first spell/ability done resolves first, then the response etc..... confusing!!

Got another one.... how about sorceries are instant speed, and instants are sorcery speed?!

Or, any card printed as an interrupt ever ignores the normal stack and functions on its own, higher priority stack...

That's more or less what interrupts would play like, were they still to exist...

Yeah!! That's going back a bit lol

I'm sorry, I seem to have derailed the discussion a bit. Why don't we move this to a new thread about "house rules" or "custom format" and let the original topic continue here. (though, it has been answered, yes?)

Sure ok. I think we both went off topic there :)
