Mycosynth Lattice and Converge
Asked by Colten_Lee 9 years ago
Alright, the artifact says you can spend mana as though it were any color. So you could spend blue as if it were red. No problem. However my friend casted a converge card, I don't remember which one, using blue as all 5 colors in an attempt to get the max benefit. I have a problem with this, as he actually only used 1 color, just used it as 5. So who is right? Does he get the max benefit or does it only see blue?
When he spends mana added to his mana pool, he may spend it as though it were mana of any colour. A Converge spell that cost say, 4U, you could tap 5 islands, adding UUUUU to your mana pool, and then -spend it- as WUBRG. Spells with converge care about which colours of mana were spent to cast them, not which colours of mana were added to the mana pool before it was spent.
They'd count converge as 5 colours in that case.

@Devonin: That is incorrect. You can spend mana as though it were mana of any color, but that effect does not change what color the mana is. is still
, and spending
will give a converge value of 1 regardless of what the cost actually is.

Mycosynth Lattice and other such effects don't change the colors of mana actually spent to cast the spell. It just changes what you're allowed to do with mana when using it to pay costs. Converge doesn't interact with Lattice in any special way.

Some additional detail:
609.4. Some effects state that a player may do something "as though" some condition were true or a creature can do something "as though" some condition were true. This applies only to the stated effect. For purposes of that effect, treat the game exactly as if the stated condition were true. For all other purposes, treat the game normally.

Mycosynth Lattice doesn't change the color of mana you have. It changes how you may spend it. Converge counts what colors you spent, so, if you spend only blue, your converge value will be 1.
