Multiple Regenerate

Asked by gameraji75 11 years ago

Can I use Dimir House Guard 's multiple times?I know it isn't necessary to cast regenerate more than once but I just want to sacrifice creatures for gravestorm effects. And I can't seem to find the rule that "multiple instances are redundunt".

Yeah you definitely can. I believe what happens is that the previous regenerate effect is replaced by the new one. I'm not 100% sure on this one, so I'd probably go with a different sac engine for gravestorm until you get an absolutely sure answer.

You can activate an ability any time you have priority and are able to pay the costs. Dumping a bunch of creatures into Dimir House Guard for whatever reason is fine.

Whenever you regenerate something it creates a replacement effect that says "the next time this would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all marked damage from it, tap it, and remove it from combat". These "regeneration shields" last until the end of the turn, can be stacked on top of one another, and are only used one-at-a-time.

Ok good to know Rhadamanthus. This is why I love the Q&A section, being able to get clarifications on common misconceptions and smaller quandaries.

Regeneration "stacks" instead of "replaces"? wow. I never thought of that. Good to know :) I will mark yours as answer, but if there's already rule for "multiple stacks", please let me get a reference.

The reason they "stack up" is from the rules for how replacement effects work, with these being the most important ones for this situation:

614.6. If an event is replaced, it never happens. A modified event occurs instead, which may in turn trigger abilities. Note that the modified event may contain instructions that cant be carried out, in which case the impossible instruction is simply ignored.

614.7. If a replacement effect would replace an event, but that event never happens, the replacement effect simply doesnt do anything.

616.1. If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected objects controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply, following the steps listed below... [a list of instructions follows, the details of which aren't necessary to post here]

Anyway, the end result of all this is that only one regeneration effect can replace a destruction event. Once it does, there's no more destruction event to replace, so any other regeneration effects that are up won't do anything. They will remain in place until they get used up or the turn ends, whichever comes first.
