Mirror Mockery interaction with Hangarback Walker

Asked by razelfark 9 years ago

Does Mirror Mockery on a creature like Hangarback Walker generate a token that copies the number of counters on the existing creature or just create a 0/0 creature that dies immediately?

Since it says it creates a copy of the creature I would assume its a copy of the base card and not all status effecting elements like counters.

Please read the Gatherer rulings before posting a question. Most basic or frequently-asked questions are answered by those rulings.

2/25/2015: The token copies exactly what was printed on the original creature and nothing else (unless that permanent is copying something else or is a token; see below). It doesn't copy whether that creature is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras and Equipment attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, and so on.

2/25/2015: If the copied creature has in its mana cost, X is considered to be zero.

Copy effects copy only what is written on the card. The token Hangarback Walker will not have an X value or counters on it by default, so it will enter as a 0/0 and die as a state-based action before you can do anything else (unless you have a static buff boosting its toughness).
