Mind Control- Sorin Markov, Artifact Equipment, and Enchantments

Asked by notinuse 13 years ago

If I control my opponent's turn with Sorin Markov , I know I can choose to burn, bounce, or kill their creatures with their own spells. I know I can activate abilities of their cards and that I control both sides of the combat phase. I can also play a creature and respond with a kill spell from my side of the board.

Can I cast THEIR creature enchantments on my creatures? Can I equip THEIR artifact equipment to MY creatures?

You may cast an enchantment spell so long as it has a legal target. This means that you may use your opponent's Auras on your creatures if you so choose.

You may NOT equip your creatures with another player's equipment, however. This is because equipping requires the target creature to be one you control.

702.5a Enchant is a static ability, written "Enchant [object or player]." The enchant ability restricts what an Aura spell can target and what an Aura can enchant.

303.4e An Aura's controller is separate from the enchanted object's controller or the enchanted player; the two need not be the same. If an Aura enchants an object, changing control of the object doesn't change control of the Aura, and vice versa. Only the Aura's controller can activate its abilities. However, if the Aura grants an ability to the enchanted object (with "gains" or "has"), the enchanted object's controller is the only one who can activate that ability.

702.6a Equip is an activated ability of Equipment cards. "Equip [cost]" means "[Cost]: Attach this permanent to target creature you control. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery."

The targets must still be legal. As for enchantments, if the only requirement is enchant creature, then your creatures are legal targets.

Equipment artifacts, however, can not be attached to the opponent's creatures. Even if you are controlling your opponent, his equipment can't be attached to your creatures unless you are the equipment's controller.

Understandable. However, don't I control my creatures in addition to controlling their creatures for the turn? In the same way that Confiscate can take an equipment, don't I technically do the same thing for one turn to ALL of their permenants?

No. You control the player, but the player controls his or her own game objects. It's a subtle difference, but it's important when it comes to finite details such as the legality of equips.
