Mind Control Exchange Rulings

Asked by ajh123 13 years ago

I was playing a game and played Mind Control on my opponents creature. A couple turns later I play a Spawnbroker and exchanged the mind controlled creature with another one of his creatures. Now he would gain control of the mind controlled creature, but I still have control of the actual Mind Control aura. Who would gain control of this creature in this situation? Due to different effects, technically it should belong to both of us, who in this case would get it?

Control-changing affects are applied in timestamp order, so your opponent should get the Mind Control led creature back.

More specifically, you have 2 continuous effects going on here: Mind Control says the creature is yours, and Spawnbroker 's effect says the creature is his. Continuous effects don't care about how they are created, it doesn't matter if one was created by a temporary trigger (via Spawnbroker) or by a permanent's effect. In this case, you apply the first control-changing effect, and then the second: You'll get the creature from Mind Control, and then he'll get it from Spawnbroker. If Mind Control leaves the battlefield, the Spawnbroker effect will continue to apply and take precedence until it is overruled by another effect, such as a second Mind Control.

What you basically have here is an incredibly fancy way to play Mind Control on your opponent's creatures and allow them to retain control of said creatures.
