Marchesa, the Black Rose with the new Commander Death Trigger

Asked by Khirgan 3 years ago

So I guess I'm not 100% on what the exact wording of the new death triggers for commanders is. I'm hoping this works the way I want it to, but if one was to steal an opponent's commander with Marchesa, the Black Rose in play, get a counter on the OP's commander, and then sac it, would it still return EOT even if OP returns it to the Command Zone?

It won't return to the battlefield under your control if your opponent moves it to the command zone. If the creature that triggered Marchesa's ability moves out of the graveyard before Marchesa's ability resolves, the ability will lose track of it and won't be able to return it to the battlefield.

The new rule for commanders isn't a triggered ability. It's a state-based action that basically works the same way as the one that handles tokens going to the graveyard. The commander goes to the graveyard for a moment, and then right before anyone gets the chance to take another action, its owner decides whether to move it to the command zone.

OK so Commanders technically do hit the bin first and then are put into the Command Zone? That's what I wanted to know thanks! I was unsure of the interaction and whether moving a Commander to the Command Zone was still a replacement effect. Since Marchesa doesn't specifically say the Graveyard I got my hopes up, but thanks for the explanation.

Khirgan: Since it's clear you got a satisfactory answer to your question and there don't seem to be any follow-ups or corrections to be made, I marked it as the "Accepted answer" so that this topic can move out of the list of unanswered questions. In the future, you can use the green "Mark as Answer" button beside the response that best answered your question to take care of this yourself when you feel your question has been resolved.

I try to avoid choosing my own responses when I do this, but in this case it was the only option.
