Magus of the Abyss

So it's pretty clear how this guy works vs protection and shroud but what is the interaction with it and hexproof, does it work because they are the one choosing the target or does it fizzle because it is still an opponents ability?
Quick note: It's not that Dungrove Elder couldn't be destroyed. It just couldn't be targeted in the first place, so the ability fizzles when there are no legal targets.

They choose a legal target for the Magus of the Abyss . It is the ability of your creature, even though it is instructing your opponent to make the choice. Your opponent cannot legally choose a hexproof creature since it cannot be target be spells or abilities controlled by you.
If they only have 1 creature out, and it is a Dungrove Elder , you cannot destroy that, even though they have to make the choice, since the source is under your control.
