Liliana Vess and first ability

Simple question. Can I do Liliana's first ability if no one has a card in hand? What if I have a card, but my opponent doesn't?

Since it says "target player" and not "target player with a card in hand", you can target any player. If that player has no cards in hand, the ability will have no effect, but you will still get the loyalty counter on Liliana.

As long as an object on the stack has at least one legal target, it will resolve the best it can. If it tries to do something that can't be done, like when Liliana Vess makes a player discard a card with an empty hand, it simply won't do anything. You don't have to target yourself and make yourself discard a card.
