Lifelink?
Asked by RockerRyan 14 years ago
My opponent attacks with a Wurmcoil Engine . I block with my Goblin Arsonist. How many life points does my opponent gain due to the Wurmcoil's Lifelink?
your opponent would gain 1 life from the Wurmcoil Engine ...and as Goblin Arsonist resolves in the graveyard'...your opponent looses 1 life if you happen to choose to target your opponent...

I apologize, 1 toughness. And olowleye, that is incorrect. Creatures assign and deal damage to other creatures or players equal to their power, regardless of toughness or life. From the MTG Comprehensive Rulebook:
510.1a Each attacking creature and each blocking creature assigns combat damage equal to its power. Creatures that would assign 0 or less damage this way dont assign combat damage at all.
510.2. Second, all combat damage thats been assigned is dealt simultaneously. This turn-based action doesnt use the stack. No player has the chance to cast spells or activate abilities between the time combat damage is assigned and the time its dealt. This is a change from previous rules.

Just to clarify, even if Wurmcoil Engine had trample, his opponent would still gain 6 life. Lifelink works for any damage dealt by the creature, regardless of whether it is dealt to a creature, player, or planeswalker.

i meant to state it as knowing that now it doesnt have trample...then the one hit will hit for 6damage...an the controller of Wurmcoil gets 6lifegain'..

In summary:
A creature will always deal combat damage equal to its power. The toughness of a creature in combat only represents how much damage it can take, not how much it can be dealt. Therefore, a Wurmcoil Engine will always deal 6 damage during combat unless there is an external effect specifically modifying the amount of damage it can do. Since it does that much damage, its controller gains that much life in accordance with 702.14b
702.14b Damage dealt by a source with lifelink causes that source's controller, or its owner if it has no controller, to gain that much life (in addition to any other results that damage causes). See rule 119.3.

Excuse me? Who runs the Q & A section, this is bullshit. My answer was clearly first and had all of the relevant rulings from the Rulebook as well.

There's no need to be unpleasant about it. If you feel the answer was chosen unfairly, ask OP. I wanted to offer my full explanation, since there had been a disagreement earlier.
It doesn't actually matter who gets the answer in the Q&A. Nobody is paying commission on these things.

There does not need to be a 'score' for integrity to be involved. I have simply noticed that whenever one of the admins answers a question, their answer is selected, regardless of the answers that have come before it. In my experience. I apologize for any unnecessary rudeness.

I have no administrative authority over the Q&A section, so I assure you I have not cheated you of an accepted answer here if that's what you're worried about.

Well, if RockerRyan selected your answer, then I have no issue. I apologize again if I seemed ignorant, and for the unnecessary use of language.

It does not matter that the blocking creature has only 2 toughness, Wurmcoil Engine will still deal 6 damage to it and Wurmcoil Engine 's controller will gain 6 life.
