Liege of the Tangle and Llawan, Cephalid Empress with Sleight of Mind
Asked by ct519 12 years ago
This happened to my friend and I when we were playing. I had attacked with my Liege of the Tangle dealing combat damage and producing my 8/8 elemental lands. Then the turn after my friend played Llawan, Cephalid Empress and used Sleight of Mind to change its color from blue to green. How would this affect my 8/8 elemental lands?

The Awakening Counters from Liege of the Tangle makes the lands into Green Elementals.
However, Sleight of Mind cannot target Llawan, Cephalid Empress 's ETB ability (since it is not a spell or a permanent). So they would not be returned to your hand. You wouldn't be able to cast Green creatures though.

Well it depends.
If your friend played Sleight of Mind while Llawan, Cephalid Empress is on stack, then all of your lands are returned to your hand. Sleight of Mind will change blue to green so when Llawan, Cephalid Empress enters the battlefield, it returns all green permanents to their owner's hand.
if your friend played Sleight of Mind after Llawan, Cephalid Empress entered he battlefield, then nothing would happen. Once an enter the battlefield ability resolves, it no longer has any use unless the creature leaves and re-enters the battlefield

Good point, w999. I didn't think about casting while she was on the stack, only as a permanent.

@UniTheDino, Sleight of Mind 's ability refers to the text of a permanent or spell. The spell would be Llawan, Cephalid Empress so it is possible for all of ct519's lands to be returned to his hand

Liege of the Tangle says the lands with awakening counters are green creatures, so anything that can affect green creatures will affect them. They'll get returned to your hand.
This of course is assuming your opponent made the play properly. If he waited until Llawan, Cephalid Empress was on the battlefield, changing her text wouldn't change the text of the triggered ability on the stack, which still says "blue creatures". If he used Sleight of Mind while Llawan was still a spell, then the permanent she becomes will have those altered characteristics, and the triggered ability from when she enters the battlefield will say "green creatures".

Can't Sleight of Mind's controller target the creature spell Llawan as it's waiting to resolve, allowing her ETB to trigger, as well as maintaining her static effect?

Yeah, I didn't think about casting it while Llawan was on the Stack.

I got ninja'd by 5 people, because I kept changing my mind on how to word my answer, lol.

I think Sleight of Mind can only change the text once, not multiple times. So you can't change both blue on llawan to green or any other color. Not sure on this one though

I think it replaces all instances of one color word for another, but they are two separate abilities (not in the same paragraph), so I'm not 100% sure, either.

Sleight of Mind specifically says "all instances of one color word". There are two instances of the word "blue" on Llawan, and both of them will be changed to whatever color word you choose (you can't make them say different colors, though).

Ok, I just reread it and it says to change ALL instances of one color word with another. So you can chane both blues but the color you choose has to be the same. Also, you cannot play Sleight of Mind on only one blue

Nothing would happen to your lands. Llawan, Cephalid Empress's effect only occurs when she ETBs, so they wouldn't be returned to hand. Also, it is not casting a "green" creature spell, so you could keep growing your army :)
