Laboratory Maniac
Asked by Rain 13 years ago
If i have Laboratory Maniac in play and 1 card left in library, i mill myself for 2, do i die or do i stil get to win the game at my next card-draw?
I think Carn13 is correct. Basically if you have 0 cards in your library, you don't lose (or win in the case of Laboratory Maniac ) until you actually are considered to be "drawing a card". So in most cases this means you have until the beginning of your next turn to live.

There's no "lose the game" condition for being milled to 0 cards, it's only when you try to draw a card from an empty library. "Draw" means either your normal draw for your turn or some other effect that specifically says "draw", so Laboratory Maniac 's ability won't kick in until the next time one of those things happens.
104.3c If a player is required to draw more cards than are left in his or her library, he or she draws the remaining cards, and then loses the game the next time a player would receive priority. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)

The Maniac's ability is a replacement effect. INSTEAD of trying to draw a card from an empty library and causing the state-based mill game loss, you win instead. Note that if the card read "Whenever you draw a card...," then it would be a triggered effect which would not work, because triggered effects are slower than state-based things like losing via mill.

Also I think the questioner, given the nature of the question, may think that you lose any time your library GOES to zero cards in the first place. It should be noted that you only lose for TRYING TO DRAW on an empty library, not for having one.

I was indeed not sure if i would lose the game or not if my library went to 0 cards cause of milling cards/effects. Seems like they don't make me lose the game so now i'm 100% sure of my deck i'm building. Thanks to all for the reply's! helped out alot :).

As far as I can see, the Comprehensive Rules say that you'd mill the last card in your library, and then win the next time you draw. Feel free to contradict me if I'm wrong.
