Kiora's first ability when her controller is KO'ed

Asked by Darthagnon 8 years ago

I was playing a 3-player duel, and Player A used Kiora, the Crashing Wave's "deal/take no damage" first ability on my Mardu Shadowspear. I then, on my turn, depleted his life to below 0. Player A is out of the game. Kiora's effect is supposed to last until her controller's next turn. But her controller is out of the game. So does this leave me with a Shadowspear that can neither deal nor take damage from Player C/Player C's creatures? Also, "deals no damage" doesn't include Shadowspear's "each opponent loses 1 life", does it? Thanks in advance :)

The Multiplayer rules state that Kiora's effect ends as soon as it's controller leaves the game:

800.4a. When a player leaves the game, all objects (see rule 109) owned by that player leave the game and any effects which give that player control of any objects or players end. Then, if that player controlled any objects on the stack not represented by cards, those objects cease to exist. Then, if there are any objects still controlled by that player, those objects are exiled. This is not a state-based action. It happens as soon as the player leaves the game. If the player who left the game had priority at the time he or she left, priority passes to the next player in turn order whos still in the game.

And yes, loss of life is not damage (while damage is loss of life), so Kiora's ability doesn't prevent the loss of life from the attack trigger.

Because Kiora's controller is out of the game, I do not think her ability would persist cause that would be stupid. I could not find the rules on that here though. And no, because Mardu Shadowspear states, Whenever Mardu Shadowspear attacks, each opponent loses one life. It is not a direct target from the shadowspear so I do not believe Kiora's ability would block that.

It lasts until the point where his turn would have begun, had he still been in the game.

800.4i. When a player leaves the game, any continuous effects with durations that last until that player's next turn or until a specific point in that turn will last until that turn would have begun. They neither expire immediately nor last indefinitely.

@HostOfSmallPox: "because that would be stupid" is not a legitimate reason when it comes to rules explanations.

Also, "direct target" is difficult to contextualize. For those effects that care about an object dealing damage, all that matters is the source of the damage, in which case it doesn't matter whether the damage is the result of a targeted spell or ability.

Also, GoblinsInc has the correct answer regarding the duration of the ability. The effect is not a continuous effect that depends on the player controlling something. It is not an object. It's an effect that has already been established and is now just operational; it doesn't have a controller. It has a set duration for which it will last.

Note, however, that the others are correct in explaining that it doesn't matter for the triggered ability because Mardu Shadowspear's ability does not deal damage; it causes loss of life, which is not the same thing (although loss of life is often the result of damage).

Thanks, guys, for clarifying that :). Here's wishing there was a "questions I've asked" tracker on TappedOut. Live long and prosper!
