Kiora, the Crashing Wavefoil prevent all damage vs trample?

Asked by WalzY 11 years ago

What happens if I use Kiora, the Crashing Wave 's +1 ability on my opponent's 3/3, then attack with my 5/5 trample and he blocks with his 3/3. Does 2 damage trample over, 5 damage trample over, or 0 damage trample over? Also, what happens if my 5/5 has deathtouch as well as trample: 5, 0, 2, or 4 damage trample over?

if your 5/5 DOESN'T have deathtouch, it deals 2 to your opponent. You have to deal the lethal damage to the creature, but everything else is allowed to go over. it doesn't doesn't matter that the damage gets prevented. with deathtouch/trample, it has to deal lethal damage to the creature, which happens to be 1 damage due to the deathtouch. the 4 damage tramples over.

Slight correction: you have to assign lethal damage to the blocker. You don't have to actually deal the damage. Assigning and dealing damage are separate things, and trample only cares about damage assignment.
