Karn and EDH.

OK I was just using gatherer to answer Tyqar's question about Karn Liberated and I saw this line that confused me. "If a player's commander was exiled with Karn at the game restarted, that commander won't be put into the command zone at the beginning of the game. It will be put onto the battlefield when Karn's ability finishes resolving."
Does this mean if someone actually lets their commander be exiled via Karn or does this mean if you had attempted to exile their commander with him and they, instead, placed it in the command zone?
I think it is the first but was not sure.

Before the Commander is put into exile, the player would more than likely use the replacement effect to send it to the command zone instead of exile.

That's what I thought.
It was worded like if you had tried to snag their commander at all it would come under your control lol so thanks for answering.

This is the actual ruling from gatherer "6/1/2011-If a player's commander was exiled with Karn at the game restarted, that commander won't be put into the command zone at the beginning of the game. It will be put onto the battlefield when Karn's ability finishes resolving."

If they instead place their general in the command zone with Karn, you will not get it. The card would have to be in the Exile Zone (a legit zone), and not the Command Zone, in order for you to restart with their general on the battlefield under your control.
