"Journey to Nowhere" and the exiled creature
Asked by arobidoux 14 years ago
So, I just got home from my local shop where we played a sanctioned Standard Pauper with just common cards and I was faced with this situation. Just wanted to know if what happened is the true way it happens.
I have a "Plague Stinger" and a "Rot Wolf" in play. My opponent, on his turn, plays a "Journey to Nowhere" targeting my "Rot Wolf". After he targets my creature, he says 'with the enter plays ability on the stack' he plays a card that bounces his "Journey to Nowhere" back to his hand. He then tells me that my "Rot Wolf" is still exiled.
Is this right?

Journey to Nowhere says that the dude was wrong right on the card.
Maybe that guy should try learning his cards better.

That's what I was thinking theemptyquiver, but I just wanted to get the exact ruling if anyone knows where to find it...

The card explicitly reads, when journey to nowhere leaves the field, return exiled creature to the field under the owners control.
I don't understand where the grey area is here?
:(
I mean I'm sure there's are oracle # rule text, but it will just be a wordier more elaborate way of saying exactly what the card says.

He is correct. This is possible. Journey to Nowhere is cast, it resolves and enters the battlefield, it's ETB ability triggers and is put on the stack, in response he can bounce the Journey to Nowhere with something like Narrow Escape . Narrow Escape resolves and bounces the Journey to Nowhere back to his hand. Journey's second triggered ability triggers and is put on the stack, it then fizzles as there is currently no exiled creature. The first triggered ability will then resolve exiling the creature. It will remain in exile.
It all depends on when he has cast his bounce. If he casts it in response before the first triggered ability resolves then the creature will remain exiled.

It's all manipulation of stack mechanics to make the second triggered ability trigger before the initial trigger resolves.

I suppose that would work.
I still don't have to like it. It sounds like a good way to get jumped in the alley after FNM.
I'm angry I've never abused that too.

Thanks for the clarification... I was just a little confused as to how it worked at the time...

No probs, it's a bit of a weird one but yeah it does work. It's just what around here we call a dick move haha. Clever, but definitely a dick move.

Yeah, I've seen this before with an o-ring, it's definitely classified as a dick move, but (personally) i feel if you're using it to permanently exile anything that cost more than about ten bucks it's fair :P

Apparently I still need to learn how to link the card names... lol
