Isochron Scepter and split cards

Asked by Fizzz 11 years ago

When you imprint Night/Day on the scepter, when you activate the ability, would you be able to cast the 3 CMC spell?

I found this question, but it just confused me more.

I believe that you can in fact cast Day if [Night/Day] is imprinted onto [Isochron Scepter], since the only time that the Scepter cares about CMC is when you are imprinting a card onto it.

Always check the Gatherer rulings before asking a question.

12/1/2004: If the copied card is a split card, you may choose to cast either side of the split card, but not both. The split cards Fire/Ice, Illusion/Reality, Night/Day, Stand/Deliver, and Wax/Wane all have at least one side with converted mana cost 2 or less.)

@HawaiianJuicebox: You need to use double brackets to link cards.

OK, so they way it works is Isochron Scepter looks at Night/Day when you try and imprint and it asks "Does this have CMC 2 or less?" and it sees Night with CMC 1 and says "yes." After that it doesn't care about CMC. You just have to pick a half to cast when you activate it, you can't choose both sides.

From Gatherer: "12/1/2004 If the copied card is a split card, you may choose to cast either side of the split card, but not both. The split cards Fire/Ice, Illusion/Reality, Night/Day, Stand/Deliver, and Wax/Wane all have at least one side with converted mana cost 2 or less.)"

Epochalyptik I did check the ruling on the Gatherer before posting my question. The wording on the 2004 ruling was not clear to me, which is why I resorted to posting the question.

The ruling does not specifically say that you CAN cast it, it just mentions the cards and makes an implicit reference that says they all have one side with CMC 2 or less.
