Is standard one block or two?

Asked by Hairyhulk 11 years ago

I am very confused about standard's blocks. Is it the most recent block PLUS the previous block? Theros is out but Return to Ravnica is still legal. When Born of the gods is released will RtR become illegal? And so on? Or is the RtR block legal until post-Theros? As you can see I clearly don't understand.

The Standard format uses only the newest sets the game has to offer. The current block, the block that was released the previous October, and the most recent core set are all legal to play in a Standard deck.

A block is a group of three sets. Standard right now has 2 blocks and a core set in it: the Return to Ravnica block, the Theros block, and the M14 Core Set. The two blocks are then broken down into three sets. For RtR, the sets are Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, and Dragon's Maze. All three of these sets have been released. For Theros, there will be three sets: Theros (which has already been released), Born of the Gods (not yet released), and Journey into Nyx (not yet released).

Standard will always have two existing blocks and a core set in it. The sets (like RtR and Gatecrash) don't cycle out until the entire block does. Return to Ravnica as a block will only cycle out once the entirety of Theros has been released, the next core set is released, and the next block is released. In fact, the day the RtR block cycles out is the day that the next block is officially released.

@Hairyhulk: RTR block is the next one to rotate. You'll have Desecration Demon until next October.

Standard includes cards from the two most recent blocks (including the current block) and all core sets released after the oldest Standard block.

Standard rotates only once per year: at the time of the release of the first set of the new block. Because we're currently in Theros block, Born of the Gods and Journey into Nyx won't cause anything to rotate out. When the first set of the next block is released next October, both RTR block and M14 will rotate.
