Is it possible to extort before a creature dies?

Asked by Trusse 12 years ago

Me and my friend were playing yesterday, and he wanted to destroy his own creature, with "murder" and then extort from the creature he targeted with "murder" is that possible?

It is possible. Extort is a triggered ability that triggers upon casting a spell. That means when the player announces that he is casting a spell and pays its cost. The spell goes onto the stack and waits to be resolved. Meanwhile, the casting of that spell triggers extort which goes onto the stack on top that spell, so it will even resolve before the creature dies of said Murder . Even if the creature then becomes a target of another removal spell (after its extort has been triggered), it will not stop extort from resolving. This is becuse once an ability is on the stack, it will resolve (if not countered) regardless of what happens to its source.

Seconded. Absinthman's answer is quite correct.
