Is infect creatures really banned from tournaments

i was talking with other mtg fans and coming up with ideas for a deck when i asked about an infect deck but they just told me that the deck was banned because it was to overpowered. is that true?
One card from the competitive modern infect deck was banned a while ago, but you can't ban a whole mechanic... You can still make an infect deck. I think your friends are lying to you or you're misinterpreting them.

no, Infect is not banned.
there use to be a modern deck that won with infect creatures and Blazing Shoal , and Blazing Shoal is banned in modern, but none of the infect creatures are banned.
The standard format only includes cards from m14, theros, and RTR block, and all the infect creatures came from SOM block, so they're not legal in standard,

They may have been referring to standard play, in which case it's already rotated out, but as far as banned from legal play in other formats, I don't think so.
