Is Den Protector still considered blocked if I buff him after a blocker is declared?

Asked by JANKYARD_DOG 9 years ago

In testing a new deck I ran into a problem I couldn't solve. If Den Protector attacks and is blocked by something legally, and in response I cast Coat with Venom on him does he go through if the blocker then becomes an illegal option, or would it still be blocked?

He will still be blocked. The ability only matters for declaring blockers, and cannot actively remove a blocker, so you need to buff during declare attackers at the latest

Would damage be dealt in that case then?

Yes, in this case damage would be assigned normally.

Once a creature is blocked, it remains blocked for the rest of combat. Even if the game state changes such that the blocker would no longer be able to be legally declared in the same blocking permutation, the block remains valid. It won't be nullified.

The blocked creature and blocking creature will deal combat damage to one another as they normally would. The only way the blocked creature can deal combat damage to the defending player is if it has trample as the combat damage step begins.
