iona, shield of emeria

Asked by Fairseas 9 years ago

just wondering if I have a chosen color lets say white. If I have a way to bounce Iona perhaps with Cloudshift . If an opponent is casting a spell can I bounce Iona to prevent them from casting a spell?

So basically, you're saying your opponent is trying to cast a nonwhite spell, and Iona is set to white, can I bounce her and name green?

Yes. Her choice triggers when she ETB, not when she's casted. Cloudshift brings her back instantly, if it brought her back at EOT, it wouldn't work.

Uh, no. It doesn't counter the spell. If you use Cloudshift on Iona in response to an opponent's spell, no matter what color you chose, they'd still have their spell on the stack and it would still resolve.

To make some clarifications:

  1. Iona, Shield of Emeria's ability is NOT an ETB ability, but rather a static ability that has you make a choice as she's coming in. ETB abilities are triggered abilities, which are always prefaced with "When", "Whenever", or "At".

  2. Iona's ability only prevents the casting of spells that have that color, so if a spell is already cast and on the stack it wouldn't be affected. This means that if you were to try and flicker her to stop someone from casting a spell, it'd be too late because the spell would be cast before you had a chance to do anything about it.
