Interactions with halimar excavators and copies

Asked by killroy726 11 years ago

If I have a single Halimar Excavator on the field and cast a kicked Rite of Replication how do the triggers stack for the best effect? Also would it work the same way with something like Tempt with Reflections (explanations greatly appreciated!)

Each one will see each other one enter the battlefield and all trigger. So when 5 of them ETB at once, each one sees 6 total allies, so you'll mill them for 30.

Same deal with Tempt with Reflections . You choose your target and put the copy onto the battlefield, its trigger is going to have to wait until the spell is done resolving to go onto the stack, so it will see as many as there are to see. Each opponent picks whether to accept the offer, then all the copies ETB at once. Presumably they'll all get a trigger for 1 for the one copy they get, and say 3 opponents all take the deal, you'll now have 4 token copies entering the battlefield, so you'll get 5 per for a total of 25 milled.

The token copies made by Rite of Replication all enter the battlefield at the same time, and they can all see each other enter. You don't have to do anything special to get the maximum number of triggers from them. The Halimar Excavator already on the battlefield will trigger 5 times, and each of the token copies will also trigger 5 times. Each of those 30 triggers will mill for 6 cards.

The different parts of Tempt with Reflections happen sequentially, so you do have to keep track of when the tokens enter and what all is on the battlefield at the specific time they enter. However, there's nothing to do here in terms of maximizing the effect either. Halimar Excavator counts allies on the battlefield at the time the ability resolves, so each of the created triggers will mill for however many allies you have.

@Devonin: Actually, there will be many more abilities than that.

Halimar Excavator 's ability will trigger whenever Halimar Excavator or another Ally enters the battlefield under your control. Also, whenever multiple permanents enter the battlefield simultaneously, they all see each other entering for the purposes of triggering abilities and such.

Therefore, in this situation there are 30 triggers. Five tokens are entering the battlefield, and there are six Allies whose abilities will trigger for each of those tokens. Each Ally's ability will count the number of Allies you control when the ability resolves (it should still be six total).

The equation thus looks like this:
[6 Halimar Excavator ] x [5 Allies entering the battlefield] x [6 total Allies] = 180 cards milled.

Tempt with Reflections would work in almost the same way. Your initial token is put onto the battlefield first. Any tokens you get from tempting other players will be put onto the battlefield after that token is, so their abilities won't trigger for the initial token. However, the abilities will all see the same total number of Allies because that number is determined on ability resolution.
