Infinite turns?

Asked by wikidpanda-the-boss 9 years ago

Does Time Vault + Voltaic Key (etc.) give you infinite turns? Every player I have encountered has said that it does not, although there is nothing that defies the possibility of infinite turns in the official rules except for ~~~If multiple "extra turn" effects resolve in the same turn, take them in the reverse of the order that the effects resolved.~~~ Not quite sure what that means, technically there is a loophole right? If it were to provide an additional turn on a single turn, you could play the card with the Voltaic Key (etc) on the second extension of the first turn? At that point, you would no longer be on the "same" turn, you would be on a separate turn. Sorry for the mind**** of this question...

I don't understand why they think it wouldn't. The wording on both cards makes it very clear that the extra turn is generated simply by activating Time Vault's last ability. If you activate the last ability multiple times in one turn, you take multiple extra turns one after the other.

I'm not really sure how you're trying to draw a new distinction between turns. Extra turns are exactly thatextra turns. They are not extensions of one turn. You move from one turn to another when players pass priority over an empty stack at the end of the turn.

They think it wouldn't because, to avoid -exactly- that kind of infinite turn combo, Time Vault spent several years requiring you to remove a time counter from it to take an extra turn, and the only way to put a time counter on it was to skip your next turn.

It was errata'd in 2004 and then again in 2006 still using time counters as the mechanism for being able to take turns with it, so you're talking over a decade of players knowing that you can't abuse time vault by just untapping it a bunch of times.

It 2006, it was changed to replace the activated ability "Skip your next turn: Put a time counter on Time Vault and untap it" with a triggered ability "At the beginning of your upkeep you may skip your next turn, if you do, untap Time Vault and put a Time Counter on it"

It wasn't until 2008 that it was changed to the current wording to "Return it to its original functionality" which allows you to not untap it on its own an unlimited number of times (The old combo with Flame Fusillade, but still abuse things like Voltaic Key

tl;dr: I think the people saying you can't, just know the card from the years where the only way you could take a turn was with a time counter, the only way you could add a time counter was untapping it, and the only way you could untap it was to skip a turn.

This clarifies a lot, I have been playing on-and-off since late 2000, staring with invasion. A few player have actually asked me why I don't have a Flame Fusillade in my deck. Thanks!
