I'm wondering about the interaction between Goblin Dark-Dwellers (Oath of the Gatewatch) and split cards like Breaking / Entering

Asked by Chandrian 8 years ago

Since one of the halves of Breaking / Entering is 3 CMC or lower, can I cast this card from my graveyard and choose the other half?

(the idea to do this came up in the Oath of the Gatewatch thread).

A split card has the converted mana cost of each side, which means Breaking / Entering has mana costs UB and 4RB respectively.

4/15/2013: In every zone except the stack, split cards have two sets of characteristics and two converted mana costs. If anything needs information about a split card not on the stack, it will get two values.

4/15/2013: On the stack, a split spell that hasnt been fused has only that halfs characteristics and converted mana cost. The other half is treated as though it didnt exist.

4/15/2013: To cast a fused split spell, pay both of its mana costs. While the spell is on the stack, its converted mana cost is the total amount of mana in both costs.

So if you are casting breaking it's cmc would be 2, but the fuse spell together would be 8

You can not cast entering form the graveyard as its cmc is 6

What about this rule, does it affect the "combo"?:

708.6c If anything performs a comparison involving multiple characteristics or values of one or more split cards in any zone other than the stack or involving multiple characteristics or values of one or more fused split spells, each characteristic or value is compared separately. If each of the individual comparisons would return a yes answer, the whole comparison returns a yes answer. The individual comparisons may involve different halves of the same split card.

Example: Sunforger has an ability that reads, RW,Unattach Sunforger: Search your library for a red or white instant card with converted mana cost 4 or less and cast that card without paying its mana cost. Then shuffle your library. This ability can be used to cast either half of Research/Development, as Research has converted mana cost 2 (even though Development has converted mana cost 5) and Development is red (even though Research is neither red nor white).

Yes, that rule is relevant. It's actually the one that answers your question (the first answer is incorrect).

Breaking / Entering has two converted mana costs: 2 and 6. Therefore, an effect that checks whether it has converted mana cost less than or equal to three will return positive, as Breaking / Entering has CMC 2 (in addition to CMC 6).

Therefore, you are allowed to cast either half of Breaking / Entering with Goblin Dark-Dweller's effect. Note that you can't fuse the spell because fuse functions only when the spell is cast from your hand.

The ruling on fuse cards that everywhere other than the stack, it's cmc is equal to the Left side. So you are able to target it with GDD. After targeting you have the choice between either half, because Breaking//Entering has cmc 2. I've done this on MTGO with Boom//Bust. I don't believe you can fuse.

@DestructivChaos: This question was correctly answered almost a year ago. There is no rule that states that split cards have CMC equal to only the left side; they have two CMCs, one for each side. Breaking / Entering has CMC 2 and CMC 6.
