I'm confused about cards that say Destroy
Asked by MTG_DualDeckmaster 12 years ago
I was told on here yesterday that cards that say Destroy don't deal damage, they just destroy. I was also told that Safe Passage does not protect against cards that have Destroy effects like Murder
But, if Destroy cards don't deal damage, why can cards that are destroyed be regenerated?
Couple extra tips, since these questions will likely come up in your mind next. Sacrificing something does not destroy it. Also, a creature with 0 toughness is put into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action, and so this is also not a destroy. In summary:
Destroy effects like Murder will cause destruction of their target, but not by causing any damage.
Lethal damage will cause destruction.
Sacs and 0 toughness on a creature do not cause destruction, but still put the associated permanent into the owner's graveyard. Regenerate shields and indestructible do not protect from these things.

Urto is correct. Think of it this way: Destroy effects cause direct destruction. When damage raches lethal level, it causes destruction too. Regeneration stops destruction.

Minusing something to death is a good way to deal with things with regenerate and indestructible. (-x/-x stuff)

Lethal damage destroys a creature. Destruction effects don't cause damage. It's a lot like squares and rectangles.
Regeneration stops destruction, much like the indestructible keyword, and so protects against destruction via both direct effects and lethal damage. A creature that has damage dealt to it negated ( I'm looking at you Uncle Istvan ) will still be susceptible to destroy effects.
