If Ring of Evos Isle is on the board, can it protect multiple creatures? Do the counters stay with the creatures after the ring is unequipped?

So for example, on the board we have Creature X, Creature Y, and Ring of Evos Isle . I am in my main phase and the ring is currently equipped on Creature X and has provided it with 2 +1/+1 counters. Now, Creature Y is the target of an instant spell that I would like to prevent from happening - I pay 1 to equip the ring to Creature Y. Safe, awesome. Does Creature X retain the original +1/+1 counters? Thanks in advance!
Equip is sorcery speed. You cannot respond to an Instant by equiping

Equipment can only be Equipped at sorcery speed, so you couldn't respond to the spell by equipping the ring and paying for the hexproof effect.
However, the +1/+1 counters obtained from the ring stay on. Any counters placed on a permanent stay there unless they move zones (hand, battlefield, graveyard, etc), or something explicitly states their removal.

Only the equipped creature is hexproof. Moving the equipment to another creature removes the hexproof from the creature.

@drhumbra That is untrue. The rings states the creature gains hexproof until end of turn; the creature actually obtains this quality for that duration.

Oh, I forgot. I pay the 1 to equip it and the TWO to give it hexproof... &c &c &c, question still stands.
